ABOUT THE GRANT

What is FLINTA? And why is the grant only available to FLINTA artists?
FLINTA stands for female, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans, agender. The term originated in Germany and may not be common in other countries, but we feel strongly about providing support for FLINTA artists worldwide.

We’ve chosen to support FLINTA artists because we believe access to funding, time, and visibility is still not distributed fairly. This grant is one small attempt to counter that imbalance by creating dedicated space for these voices.

You can learn more about the meaning and history of the term here:
https://minkaguides.com/flinta/

Who selects the grant recipient?
Submissions will be reviewed in a two-step process: an initial long-list review by a small internal team, followed by a final jury decision. The jury will be announced shortly.

Meet the Jury here.

Where does my application fee go?
Sonntag Grant does not generate profits. The application fee helps us to cover admin, running and promotional costs. Any unused funds will be re-invested into Sonntag Grant and/or donated to Ukraine Trust Chain or UNRWA’s Gaza appeal.

Where does the grant money come from?
For the first edition it’s funded by co-founder Eveline Moczko. We’re prepared to fund the next years as well, but are planning to accept donations starting in 2026.

Who are the photographers featured on the website?

  • Lidewij Mulder is a photographer from The Netherlands based in Brooklyn, New York. She works in the tradition of documentary photography, using a more conceptual approach, and strives to shed light on intimate subjects and personal stories to highlight broader socio-cultural issues.

  • Edita Liessner is Czech photographer working at the intersection of documentary, fashion and fine art. Having trained as an art curator, her approach to photography combines the intuitive work of an observer with intellectually-formed concepts.

  • Michaela Nagyidaiová is a Slovak visual artist living and working between Vienna and Bratislava. Her work analyses the connection between landscape and memory, the transformation of Central & Eastern EU environment, migration, and roots.

  • Xiaofu Wang is a Berlin based photographer. She graduated in 2023 from the Ostkreuz School of Photography in the class of Göran Gnaudschun. Using documentary and conceptual practices, her work concerns itself with place, history, and intersections between collective and individual experience.

HOW TO APPLY

In what language can I submit an application?

You can submit your application in any language however please note, we will use translation software which could potentially mistranslate your application resulting in us reviewing something which was not intended. Additionally, English is our primary language and all correspondence will be in English.

Is there an age restriction?
Yes, you need to be 18+ to apply.

Is there a geographic restriction?

No, applications are open worldwide.

Is AI-generated imagery allowed?
No.

Can collectives, curators, institutions etc. apply?
For the first year we are only accepting applications from individual artists, however this may change for future open calls.

Can I submit more than one application?
You can submit a maximum of 2 applications outlining different projects.

When submitting my previous work, should I submit one body of work, or different projects showing multiple aspects of my practice?
We love to see completed projects that are cohesive and well thought out. We feel 10 to 15 photos from one piece of work is a good way to do that, but if you have more than one project that you are excited to show us, then we are happy to see.

Please note, there is a limit of 15 photos that can be provided from previous projects so at most we recommend 2 projects with minimum of 5 photos per project. Don’t forget a project description for each one in the additional PDF.

My biography and project description is longer than the length stated in the guidelines. Can I still submit them?
Please do your best to keep it to the guidelines, however a couple of words over will still be accepted.

Can I propose a mixed media project?
Complementary work in other media – like text, film, audio, or music – is welcome, as long as photography remains central to the project. If you are proposing other media, please make sure to include links as examples in the comment field at the end of the submission form.

If the issue still persists, please reach out to us via [email protected] with a description of the issue, steps you are taking and screenshots of any errors.

Why is the application so straightforward?
Because the Sonntag Grant is about creating time and space, not taking it away. We believe artists should be able to focus on their work, not spend hours navigating complicated forms. We want you to be able to apply for support quickly and easily, so we made the application process as straightforward as possible.

Are there submission fee waivers?

We have a limited number of fee waivers available. If you are unable to pay the submission fee, please reach out to us via [email protected]. We want the grant to be as accessible as possible, and in certain situations (such as a disability, refugee status or economic hardship) we are happy to waive the submission fee.

Please note, should you be awarded the grant, you may be asked for some form of documentation.

I don’t have a credit card. How can I pay?

Yes, you retain all copyright to the work you submit, and should you be funded, the work you create. Please see our Terms for further information on this.
